Hot tapping is the process of cutting into a live, pressurized pipeline to install a branch connection. Stopple, or line stopping, isolates a section of pipe for repair or modification while the rest of the system continues to flow. How Hot Tapping Works
The process begins with a detailed assessment of the line: pipe material, wall thickness, operating pressure, temperature, and the fluid being carried. Based on this data, our engineers select the appropriate fitting, usually a split tee or welded nozzle, and the correct tapping machine.
A mechanical or welded fitting is attached to the pipe, and a valve is installed on top. The tapping machine, mounted on the valve, then cuts through the pipe wall while the line remains under pressure. The cutter and coupon are withdrawn, the valve is closed, and the machine is removed. The new branch is ready for connection.

Stopple and Plugging Techniques
When a section of pipe must be isolated, we use stopple techniques. A fitting is installed on each side of the section, and plugging heads are inserted through the fittings to stop the flow. Stopple operations are used for valve replacements, pipe repairs, riser modifications, and tie-ins. The plugs must seal completely against the line pressure, and the work inside the isolated section must be completed efficiently to minimise the duration of the intervention.
Split Tee Installation
Split tees are two-piece fittings that are bolted or welded around an existing pipe, creating a connection point for future branches. Installing split tees during planned maintenance prepares the line for later hot tapping without additional work on the live system.
We install split tees across a wide range of sizes and pressure classes, including high-pressure gas lines up to 600#. Proper preparation of the pipe surface, correct bolt torque, and quality welding are critical to the integrity of the connection.
Live Line Welding
Some connections require welding directly onto a pressurized pipe. Live line welding demands strict control of heat input to avoid burn-through, and it is only performed by welders qualified for the specific material and thickness. Our welders follow approved procedures, and the weld area is prepared and inspected to the same standard as any critical weld.
Where welding is not feasible, such as on lines carrying flammable products, we use mechanical fittings that are installed without heat. Our team assesses each situation and recommends the safest method for the specific conditions.
